Level 5 (15 credit)

Purpose

The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the nutritional composition of food and the affects of food and nutrition on an individuals health and personal well being.

Preferred Entry Level / Who should complete this course?

This programme is suitable for learners who are 18 years or older who wish to study Nutrition at Level 5 ( FETAC / QQI) for their own personal interest in the subject or for academic / career enhancing purposes who have previously achieved Level 4 FETAC / QQI certification in a related subject or equivalent standard of education.

Progression

The module is mandatory for the Level 5 Certificate in Community and Health Services - Nursing Studies award. It may also be included as an elective vocational module on a range of QQI awards. Learners may also progress to QQI awards in Sport Nutrition and / or Nutrition and Health both Level 6 QQI accredited programmes.

General Aims

Learners who successfully complete this module will:

  1. Explore the macronutrient and micronutrient composition of food.
  2. Understand the relationship between health and nutrition.
  3. Interpret current dietary information and recommendations.
  4. Be able to analyse the nutritional needs of different groups of people and devise suitable menus.
  5. Acquire a range of practical techniques relevant to nutrition.

Specific learning outcomes

The course is grouped into the following 4 units.

  1. Composition of Food
  2. Nutrition and Health
  3. Nutrition and Exercise
  4. Food Labelling

Student Requirements

All course notes are provided. Students required complete homework and assignments out of class. Students are required to have access to a computer with Word Processing software and printer for submission of assignments and homework.

Portfolio of Assessment

Assessment is by examination and 2 assignments.

Examination (Theory)

Each candidate will complete a theory examination paper, which counts towards 40% of the total mark

Assignments

Each candidate will complete two assignments which together count towards 60% of the total mark

Grading

Pass 50 - 64%,
Merit 65 - 79%,
Distinction 80 - 100%

€550 (includes course material text books and examination fees)

The course is Part Time 6 - 9:30 pm ( with tutorials to be arranged) for 10 weeks with exams on the 11th week and will run subject to a minimum of students enrolling. There is also the possibility of a class running during the daytime.
